History

The Kalyx Center for Sustainability, located in beautiful East Central Illinois, has been in operation for over 25 years. Founded by Bill Taylor, a radio engineer and local activist, the Kalyx Center serves as a venue for events and reflection to hundreds of people each year. The land abuts Allerton Park near Monticello Illinois, a quick 30-40 minute drive from CU. In 1986 an old house was purchased for 1$ from neighbors down the road and hoisted up onto wheels and moved to the land, and in 1989 a beautiful horse barn was purchased, also from down the road, also for 1$. This barn was torn down and carried in pieces to the Kalyx Center where it was reconstructed in a “barn raising” and over the subsequent 5 years or so the Kalyx Barn acquired stained glass windows and reclaimed hardwood floors.
